Speech Rehabilitation for Multi-lingual patients, funded by Vinnova

A project together with Multilingual minds, aiming to serve speech therapists in Sweden by providing a digital tool for rehabilitating patients with non-Swedish native languages. The project also investigates potential applications for other multilingual patient groups.

Project description

Description

From November 2023 to March 2024 we conducted a project funded by Vinnova’s Innovative Impact Startups call, in collaboration with Multilingual Minds. Dialog is currently available in Swedish, Finnish and English and the goal of the project is to expand the product with another language; Arabic (or a specific Arabic dialect depending on initial investigations). An additional goal of the project is to investigate other multilingual patient groups that can benefit from a digital training tool. The goal of the project is to launch a version of Dialog that can be used by speech therapists in Sweden to help in the rehabilitation of people with a mother tongue other than Swedish. More information on the project goals and objectives can be found on Vinnova's website.

Results and summary:

During the project, we investigated the feasibility of creating digital exercise material in Arabic, researched additional patient groups, and designed ways to include Arabic exercises and new formats for these groups. Although the goal of implementing all the designs was not fully achieved within the timeframe, PDF materials for Arabic-speaking aphasia patients were created, to ensure these resources were available by the project's end.

The project produced two direct-use deliverables: a white paper on the availability and quality of Arabic speech recognition and synthesis, and Arabic aphasia practice materials in PDF format. Additionally, the project laid a strong foundation for Dialog by clarifying the structure and content needed for exercises for the additional patient group of children, and preparing the design and architecture to accommodate materials in multiple languages, including Arabic.
